Piping components for food & fmcg

Anything touching product has to be cleanable in place and demonstrably so. Surface finish is a specification, not a finish detail.

The requirement

What food & fmcg demand of a fitting

Product-contact piping in food manufacturing is designed around cleanability. Internal surfaces are polished to a specified roughness, dead legs are eliminated, and the geometry is arranged so that clean-in-place solution reaches every internal surface at the required velocity.

SS 316L is the standard grade for product contact, with 304 acceptable on many utility circuits. The distinction matters commercially as well as technically, and it should be settled before the enquiry rather than after.

Around the product lines sit ordinary utility services (steam, chilled water, compressed air) where standard stainless and mild steel fittings apply. Both scopes usually come from one supplier on one order.

Where these components sit

  • Product transfer lines in polished SS 316L
  • CIP supply and return circuits
  • Steam and condensate for process heating and sterilisation
  • Chilled water and glycol circuits
  • Compressed air and utility distribution

Specification points that matter here

  • Specify the internal surface finish (Ra) required for product contact; it is not implied by the grade
  • SS 316L for product contact; 304 commonly accepted on utilities
  • Eliminate dead legs; keep branch stubs within accepted diameter multiples
  • Tri-clamp connections where frequent dismantling for inspection is expected
  • Confirm whether material certificates and a declaration of food-contact compliance are required

Standards that apply

Scope and key points for each are on the standards reference; dimensions and pressure classes are in the Technical Catalog.
