What is a Buttweld Reducing Tee?
A Buttweld Reducing Tee is a type of pipe fitting used to connect three pipes at right angles, forming a T-junction with one outlet smaller in diameter than the other two. This unique design allows for the efficient regulation and distribution of fluid or gas flow within piping systems where pipes of different sizes need to be joined.

Technical notes
How the component behaves in the line, and the details to settle before an order is placed.
How it behaves in the line
- Branch bore is smaller than run bore: specify as Run × Run × Branch (e.g. 4" × 4" × 2")
- Branch M dimension is shorter than an equal tee of the same run size
- For very large size reductions, verify availability: extreme ratios may be non-stock
- Flow direction: run is the through-flow; branch is the take-off
Confirm when ordering
- Always specify all three sizes: e.g. 4" × 4" × 2" reducing tee
- Non-standard size combinations may need 3–4 weeks lead time
- Verify standard (IS vs ASME): centre-to-end dimensions differ
Dimensions, wall thicknesses and pressure classes are in the dimension tables; the governing standards are summarised on the standards reference.
